MAS LAUNCHES MHUPGRADE SEAT AUCTION FACILITY.

Business traveller 3 NOV 2014

Malaysia Airlines has launched MHupgrade, a new auction system allowing passengers to bid for a seat upgrade.
Passengers who have booked an economy or business class ticket will receive an email informing them of available seats in the next class up.
They then decide if they want to bid for an upgrade and, if so, enter the highest amount they are prepared to spend.
Successful bidders will enjoy all the benefits of the higher class, including priority check-in, baggage allowance, boarding and in-flight meals, plus lounge access.
Only successful bids will be charged and passengers will be informed 48 hours prior to departure.
Dr Hugh Dunleavy, Malaysia Airlines' director of commercial, said: "This is a great opportunity for guests to get an upgrade to a premium cabin class.
"Make us an offer and we will only charge once your bidding is successful. There will be no introductory cost and unsuccessful upgrades will not be charged.
"On your upgraded sector, you will be able to enjoy the benefits of your upgraded class which includes priority check-in, baggage allowance, boarding and in-flight meals of business or first class as well as access to Malaysia Airlines' lounges or other airline partners' lounges worldwide."

BRITISH AIRWAYS TO FLY TO KLIA IN 2015.

Malaysian Reserve : Thursday, 18 September 2014

Hello again,

After an absence of 14 years, British Airways (BA) will fly directly to Kuala Lumpur from London beginning next year.

The airline will be making its presence felt at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) with a daily flight beginning May 27, 2015.

BACK IN LUCRATIVE KL: BA South-East Asia regional commercial manager Robert Williams (left) and Cassidy at the media briefing in KL. The airline quit the London-KL route in 2001 due to a slowdown in global travel demand following the 9/11 terrorist attack in the US. (Pic by Muhd Amin Naharul)

BA quit the London-KL route in 2001 due to a slowdown in global travel demand following the 9/11 terrorist attack in the US.

BA’s GM (Asia Pacific, Middle East & Africa) Jamie Cassidy said Malaysia has been on the airline’s radar for “quite some time now” amid the significant rise in passenger movements between KLIA and Heathrow International Airport.

“About 460,000 people are travelling the KL-London route yearly. Malaysia has grown into a tourism hub from the last time we were here.

“Malaysian projects in London such as the Battersea mega-redevelopment has also spurred travel between both destinations. We cannot find a better time to come here,” he told a media conference yesterday in Kuala Lumpur.

Another airline plying the same route is the financially bleeding Malaysia Airlines (MAS), who is a code-sharing partner with BA via the oneworld alliance.

In reference to this, Cassidy said alliances do not stop competition in the ever-competitive airline industry. He said BA will still work with the national carrier to cater to various transit passengers from London and KL respectively.

“There was no discussion about our launch with MAS. That would be anti-competitive,” he replied when asked whether BA consulted MAS before deciding on the route.

The restructuring plan unveiled by Khazanah Nasional Bhd in end-August to save the ailing MAS included rationalisation of routes, which might witness the national airline cutting operational cost by suspending its long-haul routes — London, Paris and Istanbul.

MAS now utilises the new Airbus A380 to serve its daily London service.

BA’s KL-London flight is open for booking from today, with all-inclusive return fares starting from RM3,696 for economy class, RM5,390 for premium economy, as well as RM15,264 and RM29,658 for business and first class seats respectively.

DETAILED ANALYSIS OF FDR NEEDED.

Published : NST on 2 October 2014

Hello again,

KUALA LUMPUR: AIR crash investigators and forensic experts are counting on a more detailed analysis of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17’s flight data recorder (FDR) and the remains of passengers to build a comprehensive picture of how the airliner was brought down and where the “high-energy objects” that penetrated the aircraft had originated from.

Currently, the probe is being conducted in tandem.

One area is focused on the painstaking analysis of the FDR, while the other involves a more detailed look at the wounds on the remains of passengers. This covers entry wounds, depth of projectile in the remains, type of projectile, entry angle and exit wounds, if any.

Dutch Safety Board spokesman Sara Vernooij told the New Straits Times that data from the FDR on board the Boeing 777-200ER jetliner could help narrow down the coordinates where the aircraft was shot down.

Vernooij said besides narrowing down the coordinates, the FDR would also reveal additional information about the status of the engines, the aircraft’s altitude, acceleration force and the status of the onboard systems.

It can also help investigators determine the position of flight control surfaces, such as the flaps, aileron, horizontal stabilisers, slats, spoilers and rudder.

“However, the process of encrypting the FDR will take time, as it contains binary data (zeros and ones) that needs to be converted into workable data before it can be analysed.

“A more detailed analysis of the data is also needed before we can say what kind of ‘high-energy objects’ had penetrated the aircraft,” she said.

When asked about the key information that the probe team would focus on in the hope of pinpointing the perpetrators, Vernooij refused to comment, adding that it would be covered in the final report.

Department of Civil Aviation director-general Datuk Azharuddin Abdul Rahman said he could not say for certain if the FDR could determine the trajectory of the high-speed objects that had penetrated the aircraft and brought it down.

“I was there in Farnborough in the United Kingdom when the investigators analysed the data from both black boxes.

“As stated in the preliminary report, there were no abnormalities or warning signs heard in the cockpit voice recorder (CVR). The recording stopped abruptly.”

However, he said, investigations were still in the early stages, and experts would analyse the FDR and CVR more thoroughly.

Azharuddin touched on the characteristic scouring mark on the underside of the jetliner’s left wing.

Whether the FDR or CVR could have recorded the impact of the missile on the underside of the left wing “depends on certain circumstances”, he said.

“It depends on whether the missile exploded above or below the aircraft, how severe the glancing blow was to the left wing and how it had affected the handling of the airplane.”

On the forensic side of the investigations, Kuala Lumpur Hospital pathology consultant Dr Mohd Shah Mahmood said once all the victims had been identified and accounted for, investigators would move to the next phase of the probe, which was to study the pattern of the victims’ injuries and check them against their seating arrangements.

“You can see that the remains that were either intact or relatively intact were (those of victims) sitting in the front and at the back of the aircraft, while those who suffered the most injuries were (seated) in the centre.

“Investigators may also notice that those who had sat in the centre of the aircraft, near the engines, suffered more serious injuries compared with those seated in the front and at the back, who did not suffer any burns.

“There are a lot of theories going around, but since the plane had just begun its flight, the fuel tank would have been full and those sitting near the wings (where the fuel bladders are located) would have sustained more burns compared with the others,” he said in an exclusive interview at the hospital.

Dr Shah said most of the remains had multiple injuries from the impact of falling from more than 30,000 feet to the ground, adding that many had fractured or crushed bones in several places.

“Most of the remains in the first few batches were intact.

“That is why the process of identification was faster compared with the later remains.”

He said the investigators, however, had yet to enter the next phase of investigations as there were still victims unaccounted for, including two Malaysians: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s step-grandmother, Siti Amirah Parawira, and Shaliza Zaini Dewa, who was on board the aircraft with her Dutch husband and three children.

He said the remains had been analysed by the Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) team, comprising experts from Germany, Belgium, Australia, United Kingdom and Malaysia.

However, Dr Shah said, remains with possible criminal evidence would be examined by the DVI team from the Netherlands.

“The Malaysian DVI team had no opportunity to examine the remains of MH17 passengers with possible criminal evidence, as they had gone straight to the criminal investigation team handled by the Dutch DVI team.”

He said upon the remains’ arrival in Kharkiv, Ukraine, and later, Amsterdam,  they were first scanned for chemical, biological, radiology and nuclear explosives before going through the computed tomography (CT) scan.

“Using the CT scan, the DVI team would later separate the remains, which may contain embedded
metals or other evidence, from the rest.

“Remains with foreign object embedded in them would be subjected to further investigation.

“This is important, as the objects could be evidence that could help in the investigations into the downing of the airplane.”

KKIA EXPANSION BACK ON TRACK.

TheStar :  Monday September 22, 2014

KOTA KINABALU: The expansion work on the KK International Airport (KKIA) will finally be completed next January after a delay of more than two years.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the final phase of the expansion works – the extension of the airport’s runway and taxiway – would be completed by then.

Deep in discuss ion: Liow (centre) talking to his deputy Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong (right) and Sabah MCA chief Wilfred Yong during the Sabah MCA convention in Kota Kinabalu.

“The new contractor has managed to bring forward the projected completion date from March to January next year,” said Liow, the MCA president, after opening the party’s state convention here yesterday.

He said the expansion work was more than 95% completed at the KKIA, which had been handling at least 6.5 million passengers per year. “We are now back on track.”

Liow said the airport runway had been extended by some 600m to a length of 3,780m so that it could receive larger aircraft.

The RM1.4bil KKIA expansion work began in 2005 and was initially targeted for completion in mid-2012.

Liow said his ministry was also looking at the extension of the Sandakan airport runway and Lahad Datu airport expansion as requested by the Sabah government.

Earlier when launching the Sabah MCA convention, Liow said members must understand the reforms the party was undergoing and that members must know their role and be proactive about it.

MCA members, he said, should play a leading role in the community they lived in.

“They cannot be the passengers. Party branches and divisions have to be active as well,” he added.

He said the party’s transformation must take place in the shortest time possible.

“We have come up with a ‘Stronger Together’ campaign. It not just a slogan but an initiative aimed at strengthening unity in the party,” Liow said.

He added that one of the party’s priorities was to strengthen small and medium enterprises.

Liow also directed MCA leaders to visit Sabah more frequently to assess the situation on the ground.

BRAHIM'S EXPECTED TO BE AFFECTED BY MALAYSIA AIRLINES RESTRUCTURING.

TheStar : Wednesday September 3, 2014

Hello again,

PETALING JAYA: Brahim’s Holdings Bhd’s new term business is expected to be affected once Malaysia Airlines’ (MAS) migrates its operations to a new company (Newco) by July next year.

According to AllianceDBS Research, when MAS migrates its business to the Newco, the ailing airline company is expected to renegotiate its supply contracts, including the catering contract with Brahim’s subsidiary, Brahim’s Airline Catering Sdn Bhd (BAC).

“There is unlikely to be compensation for any breach of supply contracts because there will be limited equity capital left in the old company once the selective capital repayment is completed.

“We also expect renewed emphasis on revenue yield management, which will put an end to its current aggressive promotional fares. These measures will hurt BAC’s sales volumes,” said the research house in a note yesterday.

It expects earnings to contract by 22% and 11% in Brahim’s 2014 and 2015 financial years ending Dec 31 respectively. The research house however projects earnings to grow by 15% in 2016. Brahim’s sources up to 75% of its sales from MAS’ inflight meals.

AllianceDBS also noted that regional flights typically consume less meals vis-Ć -vis long-haul flights, while the focus on yield management would lead to higher fares and lower load factor/passenger traffic going forward.

“BAC is unlikely to be able to secure new contracts from other airlines to fill the void left by MAS, especially not in the near-term. While passengers could theoretically switch to other airlines which could in turn ramp-up capacity to gain market share, we believe this is unlikely to happen.”

According to the research house, the strong passenger traffic in 2013 was mainly driven by MAS’ aggressive fare promotion. But this had led to industry-wide yield compression, which had in turn dragged airlines’ profitability.

“As such, we expect the other airlines to take the opportunity (arising from MAS restructuring) to lift fares again to more sustainable levels. Also, the other airlines will feel less need to cut fares given MAS’ renewed focus on yield management.

“However, the anticipated higher industry-wide airfares would make travel more expensive and reduce passenger traffic, and consequently, demand for BAC’s in-flight meals.”

All of these factors, said AllianceDBS, would not bode well for Brahim’s.

“Adding salt to the injury, Brahim’s has to service a large term loan which it took in 2013 when it acquired 34.3% effective stake in BAC.

“The group has since refinanced the loan with a lower-cost term loan, but we estimate the annual interest expense still amounts to RM11mil per annum.

“This financial leverage will weigh on Brahim’s bottomline should the in-flight catering business slow down substantially.”

SABAH'S SEA CURFEW EXTENDED TO SEPT 19.

TheStar : Wednesday September 3, 2014

Hello again,

KOTA KINABALU: The sea curfew in Sabah’s east coast will be extended till Sept 19 amid continuing intelligence reports of that southern Philippines based criminals were planning to carry out kidnapping activities.

Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jalaluddin Abd Rahman said the 7pm to 5am curfew was necessary to maintain security in the area as kidnap groups based in neighbouring islands were still planning hits in soft targets along the border.

“We have also received reports that there was a possibility of them trying to smuggle firearms,’’ he told reporters here Wednesday.

He said the curfew was also needed to check on smuggling activities including syabu and other subsidised Malaysian goods like fuel.

Jalaluddin said that tour and resort operators and also fish farmers were happy with the curfew, as they felt safer with the restricted movements at nights.

The curfew also enabled the security forces to carry out patrols and enforcement effectively.

He said since the curfew was enforced, a total of 92 people have been arrested of which 64 were caught for contravening the curfew order.

The others were mainly people caught without proper documents.

The curfew order covers six districts - Sandakan, Kinabatangan, Lahad Datu, Semporna, Kunak and Tawau.

U.S. AIR FORCE INVESTIGATING CHEATING BY AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLERS.

Hello again,

CBCSNEWS : August 8, 2014

The United States Air Force is conducting an investigation to explore recent allegations of cheating from its base in Grand Forks, North Dakota. The Air Force has administered new proficiency tests to its air traffic controllers at the base.

CBS News has learned that as many as 28 air traffic controllers from the 319th Operation Support Squadron have been identified as possibly being involved with cheating on their air traffic controller proficiency exam.

The Grand Forks Air Force base is home to 2,100 air force personnel, and 82 are air traffic controllers. The base also carries 12 active-duty Air Force aircrafts.

According to an official press release stated late this afternoon, an air traffic controller "possessed images of the test materials" and then sent the document to fellow Airmen.

The base has since administered an updated version of the proficiency test. Those who fail the test are "subject to the standing procedures for failing a proficiency test, to include re-training and re-testing according to Air Force Instructions."

"It is important to note that at no time was safety, security or effectiveness of the air traffic control mission ever in jeopardy," said spokesperson Lt. James Fisher. "However, as a prudent measure, those Airmen allegedly involved in the incident are not being scheduled for ATC-related duties at this time."

The news comes as the latest of several military cheating scandals in 2014. In January, more than 90 officers at the Malstrom Air Force base in Montana were suspended after many of the staff were caught cheating on their monthly nuclear program proficiency tests, resulting in the termination of nine overseeing commanders. In February, 30 sailors at the Navy's nuclear propulsion school in Charleston, SC were also accused of cheating on their written certification tests.

Due to the demanding nature of this job, Yahoo Finance has ranked air traffic control, or ATC, as the 8th most stressful occupation in the United States. According to Lt. Fisher, to become an ATC, hopeful candidates must achieve and maintain a Federal Aviation Administration ATC Specialist Certificate as well as score at least a 55 on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery Test.

AIRASIA CONFIRMS BOMB THREAT DURING THAI FLIGHT.

Hello again,

TheStar : Thursday August 28, 2014

PETALING JAYA: Air Asia has confirmed that there was a bomb threat made against one of its planes travelling from Bangkok to Phuket on Tuesday.

“We confirm there was a bomb threat against AirAsia Flight FD3003 on 26th August as reported and we have fully-co-operated with the Airport Authority of Thailand (AoT) who handled the case,” Air Asia said in an emailed statement to The Star Online on Thursday.

The flight landed safely at the Phuket International Airport (HKT) at 12.15pm, Tuesday.

The AoT said in a statement that HKT received a phone call of a bomb threat against AirAsia Flight FD 3003 after its departure from the Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok.

Upon receiving the threat, AoT confirmed that the Airbus A320-200 with 167 passengers, 4 crew members and 2 pilots, had departed at 10.55am from the airport.

“AoT then proceeded to enact its emergency procedures by designating an Isolated Parking Area for the flight and dispatching relevant agents to receive the aircraft,” said the statement.

A commanding officer at the scene led an Explosives Ordinance Division (EOD) unit and other related officers to inspect the plane’s luggage as per emergency protocols.

According to the AoT, the inspection did not turn up any suspicious objects as detailed in the threat.

It added that the airline and passengers of the flight were cooperative throughout the process and the plane was allowed to depart from HKT at 3.08pm.

It touched down at the Don Mueang Airport at 4.28pm.

“Initial checks have led authorities to believe the bomb threat was intended to stir confusion and harass travellers.

"The AoT has launched a full investigation into the matter,” said the statement.

According to a report on The Nation, the Thai national soccer players were among passengers on the flight.

They were scheduled to play warm-up matches against Myanmar, the Phuket Football Club and Qatar in preparation for the upcoming Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea.

PENANG-BOUND MALINDO AIR FLIGHT DELAYED DUE TO BOMB THREAT.

Hello again,

Bernama | Updated: August 27, 2014

KUALA LUMPUR: A Malindo Air flight OD1158 bound for Penang with 37 passengers and crew on board was delayed for several hours after the plane was halted due to a bomb threat before take-off at the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang, Tuesday.

Malindo Public Relations and Communications director Raja Sa'adi Raja Amrin said the flight captain was alerted of a possible bomb threat during boarding and as per standard operating procedures, the airline alerted the control tower and the authorities.

He said the plane, which was scheduled to depart for Penang at 3.40pm, was taxied to a remote bay to disembark the passengers safely and they (passengers) were quarantined as part of the safety procedures.

"The Bomb Disposal Unit conducted a thorough search of the aircraft and the passengers' luggage and later gave clearance that the aircraft is safe," Raja Sa'adi said in a statement here Tuesday night.

He said the passengers, including one infant were provided with meals, and had been transferred on another flight which departed for Penang at 9.30pm.

Assuring that the situation was dealt professionally, Malindo Air stressed that the airline took such threats to the wellbeing and safety of passengers very seriously.

Meanwhile, Petaling Jaya police chief ACP Azmi Abu Kassim, when met at the airport, said the flight had to be delayed after one of the passengers uttered the word 'bomb' to one of the crew during the inspection of boarding passes.

He said during the inspection, the man showed his boarding pass to the crew and asked: "Kenapa nak periksa sekali lagi, bukan ada bom pun," (Why do you need to check again, it's not like there is a bomb here,")

Azmi said the man was probably unaware that the word 'bomb' was a very sensitive word in the aviation industry which involved the safety of passengers and crew members.

"After being alerted by the airline, our Canine Unit and Bomb Squad were rushed to the scene to carry out thorough inspection on the plane, but found nothing.

"The Malindo Airline crew concerned who was asked to identify the passenger who uttered the word also failed to remember," he said, adding that the police were still carrying out thorough probe on the incident to prevent untoward incidents.

MAS DEBUNKS EMPTY FLIGHT REPORT BY AUSSIE NEWS PORTAL.

Hello again,

TheStar :  Friday August 29, 2014

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia Airlines has debunked a report by an Australian news portal that described one of its planes as nearly empty, saying that the London-KL flight was actually over 90% full.

The portal — news.com.au — had alleged that the airline was “burning through its cash reserves” to stay afloat and used pictures in social media by passengers showing empty seats and check-in lines.

One photograph used by the portal was by MasterChef UK 2014 winner Catherine Chin Wan Ping Coombes, who later defended MAS, saying that Flight MH01 was full and that families with children boarded first.

In an e-mail to The Star, MAS said it appreciated the support given by Chin.

“The MH01 flight carried 464 passengers. MAS is touched by the ongoing support of its loyal guests and it strives to provide world-class service to all its passengers,” it said.

Malaysians, who have been on MAS flights after the MH17 incident on July 17, have also come out to defend the airline.

Communications student Carmen Teoh, who took a MAS flight to London, said her flights to and from the British capital were all full.

“The Caucasian lady next to me seemed nervous and even stopped a steward to ask why the flight route seemed to have deviated but it was all okay in the end,” said the 23-year-old.

“If we Malaysians do not stand by our national carrier, then who will?” she said.

IT consultant Johari Yusof, 36, said his flight back to Malaysia from London three days ago was about 80% full.

“When there was turbulence, some could afford to laugh. There were also more foreign passengers than Malaysians,” he said.

Senior manager Elly Yusof, 40, intentionally chose MAS for all her destinations to support the airline after the MH370 incident and will be flying MAS to Cambodia this Sunday.

“Rather than ‘abandoning’ or bad-mouthing our national airline in its time of difficulty, we should try to support it instead,” she said.

Daniel Wa, 26, who recently flew to Cambodia via MAS, said he felt that the flight attendants were even more caring towards passengers after the MH17 incident.

“They were more polite and explained to the passengers whenever there was turbulence to assure us that we were safe,” he said.

Law student Lisa J. Ariffin said those afraid to fly on MAS were “missing out on the experience” as the cabin crew were the friendliest she had ever encountered.

Khazanah Nasional will announce today its restructuring plan for MAS.
